Coffee was introduced to Malawi in 1891 by the British and has been grown there ever since. Unlike many neighboring countries, Malawi was one of very few origins that sold its entire crop by estate rather than by a national grade. Historically, this wasn’t advantageous because it gave no real identification of cup quality to the coffee. Today, changes including stronger disease resistant tree varieties and better farm management, along with adopting common East Africa grade sizes of AAA, AA, and AB, are leading Malawi to better access to the specialty industry.
